Mensuration - Lesson 5

Lesson 5

The Do Phase

(5.1) Project Launch:

Introduced the project with common instructions in the class room.
Divided the entire class into five groups with a group leader.
Assigned the work to each group
Explained the task to each group with the objectives , rules, procedure and expectations.
Objective: to learn the formulae of area and volume of cuboid.
Expectation: apply the concepts in practical situation.
(5.2) Artifacts:

Collection of data.
Mapping of class room.
Calculation of area and volume of cuboid.
Power point presentation
(5.3) Culminating product:

Calculation [part in the activity book.   Soft copy of PowerPoint  presentation .
(5.4) Celebrating completion:

Students will get grades of one activity for FA4 after the completion of project.

Mensuration - Lesson 3

Lesson 3- Plan Phase

3.1 Work Breakdown, Products and Milestones:

Take the dimensions of the class room, windows, door, black board,  white board and display boards.
Calculate the area of four walls, roof, windows, wring boards and display boards.
Find the area of the region is to be painted.
Enquire the cost of painting per meter. Find the total expenditure for painting.
Calculate the volume of the water tank with same dimensions.
Prepare the power  point presentation
Draw the map of class room
3.2 Role definitions:
            .
Group I:  Measure the area of the region to be painted. Find the volume
Group II: Find the area of Display boards, white board and Black Board. Find the number of rectangular sheets required to decorate the board.
Group III : Find the area of windows and find the length of cloth required to make window curtain.
Group IV: Find the expenditure for painting the classroom and putting window curtains.
Group V:  Make the power point presentation.
3.3 Task schedule:

Project started on 9th November 2016
End date 15th December 2016
Taking  measurements on 15th November 2016
Calculation of area and volume on 21st November
Finding expenditure on 29th November

3.6 Direct Instruction:
Learn the formulae for finding the area and volume of plane figures.
3.7 Reviews and checkpoints:

Weekly 5 minutes to get the progress of the task assigned.
3.8 Assessment plan:

Formative assessment based on the accuracy of data collection and formula used.
Summative assessment based on the presentation and co ordination of group members.

Mensuration - Lesson 2

Lesson 2
2.1 Essential Question:

1) Find the total expenditure for painting the walls and roof of classroom, putting the window curtains and door curtain and decorating the display boards in the class room.
2) Find the capacity of the water tank having same dimensions of the class room.
2.2 Grouping Strategy:

The entire class is divided into five groups. The activities are planned  as follows:-
Group1:-  Take the measurements of the class room. Find the total surface area of the walls and roof. Find the volume of the classroom.
Group2:- Take the measurements of the display boards. Find the total no of rectangular sheets required to paste on these Boards.
Group3:- Find the measurements of the windows and door and find how much cloth is required to make the window curtains and door curtain.
Group 4:- Find the total expenditure for painting and making the curtains.
Group5:- Make the power point presentation of this project.
2.3 Learning Environment:

Learn
;- to take the measurements of a cuboid and rectangle field.
:- the formulae for finding area and perimeter of a rectangle and the formulae for finding the surface area and volume of cuboid.
The students collect the information like  the cost of paint and cloth, labour charge and stitching charge etc.
2.4Assessment Approach:
                                2.41 Authentic Assessment:
Identification of dimensions with unit.
Use of correct formula
Computation skill

2.42 Formative Assessment:

Presentation of the topic by the group members
Suggestions by the members of other groups
Mapping of the classroom
2.43 Summative Assessment:
            Power point presentation
Common suggestion/decision taken by the class to minimise the expenditure
2.44 Rubrics:
            1)Originality of the data collected
             2) Presentation
             3) question and answer
             4)Problem solving ability
              5) time bound

2.45 Gradings:
            Each rubrics has 10 points.

Mensuration - Lesson 1

1.Project Plan
(1.1)The Define Phase
(1.11)Introduction:

The purpose of the project is
- to understand the basic concepts of both plane figures and three dimensional shapes.
- to learn the formulae of perimeter of a rectangle, lateral surface area , base area and volume of a cuboid.
- to apply the knowledge in practical situation.

(1.12)Project Scope:

The project is planned for class VIII under the topic 'Mensuration'.  It helps the students to understand the need of studying this topic, how to apply the concepts in our life situation and to learn the formulae of area and volume

(1.13) Curriculum and Standards:

1) Area and perimeter of rectangle
